Senior Jazz Auditions

Friday, May 11 after school

This year we are changing up our system. We will have one audition date – Friday, May 11, after school. Expect to be at school until around 6:00.

Everyone will play together—it will be similar to a jazz rehearsal, and we will have members of the current band here to help out and play with you!

What to Expect

Here’s what you’ll need to know:

  • Scales: All major scales must be memorized
  • Choosing your piece: Show off what you do best. It’s better to play something at a moderate tempo clean and with great style than to play a blazing be-bop tune sloppily
  • Assigned pieces will be made available for each instrument a few days before you audition. The idea here is to see what you can do on your own in a short period of time
  • Improvisation: We will have current members of the jazz ensemble here to play with you, trade with you, and help you
  • Sight reading: Can you keep going/feel beats 1,2,3,4
