2017-2018 Seattle JazzED Opportunities

Seattle JazzED is a non-profit music education organization in the Central District. They are dedicated to creating awesome opportunities for kids and ensuring equal access for all with scholarships and instrument loan assistance. Currently over 500 kids from 70+ schools come through our doors annually.

All-Star Combos—Coaching (starts in October)
Get placed in a gigging combo. Limited spots for middle schoolers are filling up and rehearsals start soon. Grades 7-12, $325, scholarships available. \

Girls Jazz Sleepover – Saturday, October 14-Sunday, October 15
One weekend, 100% dedicated to girls who play or sing. Make friends, connect with professional female musicians, and come away inspired and empowered. You’ll learn tons of great stuff in all day clinics with faculty coming in from New York: Erica von Kleist (sax), Roxy Coss (sax), Sarah Elizabeth Charles (vocals), Linda Briceño (trumpet), Savannah Harris (drums), Mariel Bildsten (trombone) and others. Plus you’ll bond with other girls at group meals, movie night, all-sing and the final performance for friends and family. Grades 6-12. Any instrument, including vocalists, welcome. $120, includes meals. High school girls interested in earning service hours as sleepover counselors should contact us through our website. Big Band Ensemble–Auditions Saturday, Nov 18 – Sunday, Nov 19
Kids come from all over the region to play and perform in the JazzED Big Band Ensembles. Work with acclaimed teachers like Clarence Acox, Darin Faul, Mark Taylor and other great educators! Rehearse on the weekends from January through May 2018. Big Band Ensemble auditions open to grades 5-12. Students are placed in one of six ensembles. $25 audition fee, waiver available. Nina Simone Vocal Ensemble—Audition Saturday, November 18
Explore the crossroads of America’s roots music by singing and performing jazz through a gospel lense. Learn from the best—this ensemble is directed by Seattle gospel legend Cora Jackson. Performance opportunities throughout the season. (It’s not just for girls; boys welcome!) Rehearse Saturday afternoons, January – May. Grades 8-12. $25 audition fee, waiver available. New Works Ensemble and Creative Orchestra Project—Audition Sunday, November 19
Open to all instruments, not just jazz instruments (and we mean it! Viola, cello, bassoon, French horn, etc.) Explore multi-genre and new compositions with wildly popular director Wayne Horvitz. Rehearse weeknights January through May, 2018. Multiple performances throughout the season. Grades 6-12 for the Creative Orchestra Project. Grades 9-12 for New Works Ensemble.
